Provisional P1 & P2 Rider's Licence?

How do I get my Provisional Rider's Licence?

You must have held your learner rider licence for a minimum of three months before you are eligible to attend the pre provisional course. You can book the course any time after gaining your learner rider licence.

Pre-provisional training course

The pre-provisional course is six hours of training followed by the Motorcycle Operator Skill Test (MOST).  Testing usually takes about one hour, depending on the number of tests to be conducted.  You must provide the motorcycle and protective clothing to undertake the course and motorcycle riding test.

Your learner rider licence is only valid for twelve months. If you have not passed the pre-provisional course within that time, your learner licence will expire and you will need to attend the pre-learner course again.

After The Course

After passing the course, you will be issued with a pre provisional certificate of competence which is valid for three months. Failure to obtain a provisional P1 licence within the three months of being issued the certificate will mean you will need to re-attend all training.

A P1 rider licence is issued for 18 months. You must hold a P1 rider licence for a minimum total period of 12 months before being eligible to progress to a P2 rider licence.

You can upgrade to a provisional P2 rider licence after 12 months.  The provisional P2 licence is valid for 30 months. To upgrade to an unrestricted motorcycle rider licence, go to any motor registry after having held a provisional P2 licence for 24 months.

Rider Training Courses and Test Bookings

You can book and pay for the pre-learner rider training course, the pre-provisional rider training course, the motorcycle riding test and the rider knowledge test:, on line at my RTA.com, by calling the RTA on 132213 or at any motor registry.

Note: If a scooter is required for training, please advise the operator or the registry officer at the time of booking.

Hints/Tips for Attending The Course

Arrival times

Plan to arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled course start time. Applicants who arrive after the course has started WILL NOT be allowed to join the course.

Courses must start on time. To include those who arrive late would require the instructor to restart the course, thereby disrupting and inconveniencing other participants.

Applicants who arrive late forfeit their course fees and will be required to repay and re-book before re-attending training.

What do I bring with me on the day?

  • The receipt issued by the registry or the one received in the post if you paid by credit card over the telephone

  • Your current Learner Rider's licence

  • Your motorcycle in a registered and roadworthy condition with current registration label and "L" plates affixed. (You will not be allowed to undergo training or testing on a motorcycle that is not roadworthy and registered).

What to wear on the day;

  • Wear jeans, leather or other type of sturdy long pants

  • Boots or sturdy shoes

  • Long sleeved leather, denim jacket or other type of sturdy long sleeved jacket

  • Gloves

  • Bring a hat and sunglasses

  • Approved helmet. (The Australian Standards AS1698 sticker must be displayed upon the helmet).
